Birmingham City Councilman calls for more police checkpoints

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — A Birmingham City councilman is calling for more aggressive police action, including vehicle checkpoints, following the deadly weekend shooting at Railroad Park.

Councilman Steven Hoyt made his request during today’s council meeting. It was the first public meeting since 15-year-old Jarmaine Walton was fatally shot in the head at the popular green space Sunday night.

The park is just across the street from the $64 million city-financed Birmingham Barons baseball stadium set to open next month.
