Birmingham City Councilwoman Lashunda Scales charged with ethics, voter violations

BIRMINGHAM Alabama — Birmingham City Councilwoman Lashunda Scales has been charged with three felony counts accusing her of using her position for personal gain and voter intimidation.

Scales turned herself in around 10 a.m. today and was set for release shortly afterward, officials at the Jefferson County Jail confirmed to AL.com/The Birmingham News.

Most of the charges relate to a 2011 ethics complaint by a former business associate of Scales who alleged that the councilwoman, who is also an event promoter, used police and city equipment for personal business and used her council position as intimidation during a dispute.
