Judge denies new trial for former Birmingham police officer sentenced to 100 years for arson convictions

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – A judge this morning denied a request for a new trial by a former police officer who was sentenced to 100 years in prison for his conviction related to arson fires last year in Birmingham and Warrior.

Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Clyde Jones denied the request by former Birmingham police officer Curtis Jeffrey Thornton, 28, for a new trial during a hearing this morning. Thornton was not present at the hearing but was represented by his appellate attorney, Kellie Tubb.
