Legislature’s prison committee to seek facts on report of inmate beatings, abuse

MONTGOMERY, Alabama — The chairman of the Alabama Legislature’s prison committee has called a meeting for Aug. 27 to discuss allegations of prisoner abuse in a report released Tuesday by the Equal Justice Initiative.

The EJI, which first drew attention to problems at Julia Tutwiler Prison that are now the subject of a Department of Justice Investigation, said there were nearly a dozen instances in the last six months in which inmates had been handcuffed, stripped and beaten by guards at Elmore Correctional Facility in Elmore County.
