Maxwell Air Force Base allows officer candidate to omit phrase ‘so help me God’ from oaths

MONTGOMERY, Alabama – An officer candidate at Maxwell Air Force Base who threatened to sue if made to say “so help me God” as part of graduation events will be administered a secular oath during ceremonies held here today. He will also be reissued a new version of the written oath with any referenced to God removed.

Attorneys for officer trainee Jonathan Bise said the use of the religious phrase in the mandatory oath violated his constitutional rights and threatened to sue if Bise and others weren’t allowed to take secular oaths.
