MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Should marijuana be legal for medical purposes in Alabama? That’s the topic being discussed among lawmakers at the Alabama Statehouse. Wednesday, a hearing was held by the House Health Committee to get both sides of the argument.

Outside the Statehouse, a sizable rally was being held by those looking to make the drug legal for medical reasons. Among them, Terry Bradley, who says he’s use marijuana for 15 to 20 years to treat chronic pain and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

“I wouldn’t have to take all the medicines that have side effects, everything from suicidal thoughts to just being unable to function…” Bradley says.

Alabama governor’s budget plan pleases neither lawmakers nor commenters

The Birmingham News

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley on Wednesday proposed state budgets for next year that would use the Education Trust Fund to give a $230 million bailout to the cash-strapped General Fund, which supports prisons, courts and other non-education areas of state government, Birmingham News writer Dave White reported.

Many lawmakers blasted the idea, and some said Bentley’s bailout plan had no chance in the Legislature, even though the governor said there won’t be a plan B. His plan A didn’t appear to impress commenters in the online community, either.

State grant will continue juvenile sex offender program in Madison, Marshall, Limestone and other counties

By Chris Welch
The Huntsville Times

MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded a $408,170 grant to continue a Department of Youth Services program that holds juvenile sex offenders accountable while seeking to change their behavior.

The program is available in 15 counties including Madison, Limestone, Marshall, Autauga, Bibb, Elmore, Hale, Jefferson, Montgomery, Morgan, Pickens, Shelby, St. Clair Talladega and Tuscaloosa.

The department’s Continuum of Care program holds juveniles responsible for their actions and teaches them the consequences of their behaviors through individual counseling.

“Youthful offenders in this program have an opportunity that may not be available later in life — a chance to turn away from a life of crime,” Bentley said. “I commend the program staff for their commitment to helping these juveniles turn their lives around before it’s too late.”
