Four male members of the Birmingham city council wore hoodies to Tuesday’s meeting to show solidarity in the Trayvon Martin case.

Trayvon was wearing a hoodie the night of his death and people across the country are donning the hooded jackets as a sign of support. Florida police say a neighborhood watch captain named George Zimmerman shot and killed the teen who was walking home. Police say Zimmerman claimed self-defense and has not been arrested in the case that has set off national protests.

Council president Roderick Royal said the Trayvon Martin case is about stereotypes and “we join residents across the country in saying justice must be done.”

“We need to face the real enemy in this country, and that enemy is sometimes ourselves,” Royal said.
